과학과 예술 - 통제된 실험

 

다음에는 과학과 예술의 차이점과 과학자의 실험방법에 대한 짧은 영문글을 해석해 보았다.

 

The essential distinction between science and art consists in the fact that science makes appeal to universal agreement, whereas art does not. 

 

과학과 예술의 본질적인 구분은 과학은 보편적인 합의에 호소하는 반면에 예술은 그렇지 않다는 사실이다.

 

A scientific statement, we are told, is open to confirmation by anybody, while a work of art appeals only to people with certain sensibilities.

 

우리가 목격하는 과학적 진술은 누구에게라도  확인으로서 받아들여지나, 예술의 작품은 어떠한 감성을 가진 사람들에게만 호소력이 있다. 

 

 

 

 

 

It is the business of the scientist to accumulate knlowledge about the universe and all that is in it, and to find, if he is able, common factors which underline and account for the facts he knows.

 

과학자의 일은 우주와 그 안에 있는 것들에 대하여 지식을 축적하고, 할 수 있으면 그가 알고 있는 사실들을 강조하고 설명하는 공통요소들을 발견하는 일이다.

 

He chooses, when he can, the method of the 'controlled experiment.'

 

과학자는 할 수 있는 때에 통제된 실험방법을 선택한다. 

 

If he wants to find out the effect of light on growing plants. he takes many plants of the same kind.

 

만약에 자라고 있는 식물들에 대한 빛이 미치는 영향을 발견하고자 한다면 그는 같은 종류의 많은 식물들을 사용한다.

 

Some he stands in the sun, some in the shade, some in the dark; all the time keeping all other conditions (temperature, moisture, nourishment) the same.

 

몇몇은 태양 아래에, 몇몇은 그늘에, 또 몇몇은 어둠 속에 배치한다. 그 외 다른 모든 조건들(온도, 습도, 영양분)은 항상 같게 유지한다. 

 

In this way, by keeping other conditions constant, and by varying the light only, the effect of light on the plants can be clearly seen. 

 

이러한 방법으로 다른 조건들은 일정하게 유지하고 빛만 다양하게 함으로써 식물에 대한 빛의 영향을 명확하게 볼 수 있게 된다.
