프랭클린 루즈벨트 (Franklin D. Roosevelt) 연설문

다음은 루스벨트(Franklin D. Roosevelt)의 "Four Freedoms" Speech"  4가지 자유연설 중의 일부이다.

 

프랭클린 D. 루즈벨트는 미국의 32번째 대통령(1933~1945년 재임)으로써 미국의 대공황기를 맞이하여 뉴딜정책을 펼쳤으며 또한 제2세계대전에서 연합국의 승리를 이끌었다.

 

In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.

 

(우리가 안전하게 만들고자 하는 미래에 있어서는, 우리는 4가지의 필수적인 인간의 자유에 기초한 세계를 기대한다.)

 

The first is freedom of speech and expression - everywhere in the world. (첫째는, 세계 어디에서나 언론과 표현의 자유이다.)

 

The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way, everywhere in the world. (둘째는 세계 어디에서나 모든 사람의 자기 방식대로의 신앙의 자유이다.)

 

The third is freedom from want - which, translated into world terms, means economic understands which will secure to every nation a healthy peace time life for its inhabitants - everywhere in the world. 

 

셋째는, 결핍으로부터의 자유인데 그것은 세계적인 용어로 본다면, 세계 도처에서 모든 나라의 주민들의 건전한 평화시기를 보장해 줄 경제적인 이해를 의미하는 것이다.

The fourth is freedom from fear - which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and such a thorough fashion / that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbour - anywhere in the world.

 

넷째는, 공포로부터의 자유인데, 세계적인 의미로 본다면,  세계도처의 어느 나라도 어떠한 이웃나라에 대하여도 물리적 침략을 감행할만한 지위에 있지 못할 정도로 또 철저한 방법으로 전 세계적인 군비축소를 의미하는 것이다. 

 

That is no vision of distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation.

 

(이것은 먼 천년의 비전이 아니다. 그것은 우리 자신의 시대와 세대에서 달성할 수 있는 일종의 세계에 대한 명확한 근거이다.)

 

That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called new order of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb. 그러한 세계는 독재자들이 폭탄을 폭발시킴으로써 만들어 내고자 하는 소위 폭정의 신질서와는 정반대인 것이다.
